December results, First year tally

December was like another November. Online play, bankroll down $153; live play, bankroll up $478. Overall I finished the month up $325. Not a million, but my best month yet and the third consecutive positive month. Since this is the end of my first year playing NLHM, I'm not ashamed to say I finished my first year down $503. Pretty good turn around in the last 3 months (from $-1300).

A buddy of mine played in a WSOP circuit event in Tunica, Miss. He came in 217 out of 1300+. Pretty good showing, i thought, even though he didn't cash. It sure wetted my appetite to make the trip. If the Bronco hadn't slung the tranny guts all over I-75 and developed a hell of a rattle in the engine, I would have gone. Oh well.

I just finished reading Phil Gordon's Little Green Book. Not as technical, detailed and methodical as Herrington. Not as philosophical as Sklansky. Not as arrogant as Helmuth (who could be?) But it sure gives you the impression that Gordon's a helluva gentleman and a pro's pro. After reading it, I was disappointed that I missed meeting him at my local poker club about a month ago. I even felt that I was emulating him in my last few live games. The good sport "act" started to transfer into a little less relentless play and a little more sweetheart. I had to tell myself to be pleasant on the surface and rip their guts out without hesitation in the game. Not too hard of a transition for me, but a good reminder. After watching some WSOP events I have come to appreciate the gentlemanly nature of pros like Raymer and Gordon. I'm starting to think that the Helmuth whining and the Matusow mouth are indicators of personal weakness. I think my game would improve if I could control my mouth a little better as well. Why let your opponent know your bothered? So he can antagonize you even more? Let him continue to search for your personal weaknesses. Let him second guess if he's getting to you, while you pay attention to the cards, his tells, and develop the winning strategy to knock him out. After all, the win is so much sweeter than any smack talk.

Good luck at the tables. Hope to see you there!

Ed.
